“In this way I do most deeply vow to train the self”. With this recurring line from the Daily Recitation, we focus our intention to follow the path of liberation blazed 2,500 years ago by Siddhartha Gautama, Shakyamuni Buddha. Counting off the verses on a mala, or string of beads, we renew our dedication to the teachings and methods of this great mindfulness path. The Daily Recitation is usually recited prior to the first sitting meditation of the day. According to Buddhist teaching, anyone may become a Buddhist simply by saying aloud that they take refuge in the Three Treasures: Buddha (the truth of existence), Dharma (the teachings), and Sangha (the community of practitioners). For use as part of your daily practice, we offer the Daily Recitation printed as a 4.25″ x 5.5″ folded card with an accompanying mala and Key. The Daily Recitation card includes:
- The Three Treasures
- The Four Noble Truths
- The Three Characteristics of Existence
- Heart Sutra (very concise)
- The Eightfold Path
- The Three Pure and the Ten Great Precepts
- The Paramitas
- An Auspicious Day
